SilverSurfer 06-11-2004, 07:24 AM I've just left the garage after trying to install my new LP aluminum turnsignals (marker lights), but the connetions are not compatible.
:confused
Has anyone else installed LP aluminum lights on a Triumph? What did you do for a connector? I don't want to take the connection off of the OEM turnsignals and ruin them forever (in case I have a problem with the yearly inspection). Is there an adapter available? Do I need to find the same connector as the OEM turnsignals and crimp them onto the LPs?

TunedUp 06-11-2004, 07:28 AM I had the same question Sean...........
Post up if you fing the right ones!
TSpeed 06-11-2004, 08:25 AM Try using some scotch locks? Locks (http://www.etrailer.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=E&Product_Code=34466000-5&Category_Code=T)
They just pierce the wire.....I post the link just for a pic.
edit: and just use some heat shrink to cover the exposed (unusable end).
SilverSurfer 06-11-2004, 09:01 AM I was just informed of this cool little product: Posi-Lock (http://www.posi-lock.com/). You cut the wires, remove some casing, slide the wires into each piece, then screw them together. Water tight, dust tight, easy to connect and disconnect.

I'm off to WalMart to see if I can find them.
TSpeed 06-11-2004, 09:03 AM Opps.....I completely forgot about those!!!!
But you still have to cut....I thought you wanted to avoid that?
SilverSurfer 06-11-2004, 10:32 AM Cutting wasn't necessarily something I wanted to do, what I wanted to avoid was a situation where I couldn't go back to the OEM signals. This at least allows me to go back to OEMs, if I cut them too, fairly easily.
The posi-locks work really well. Very easy to install. I bought a set of 12-18 gauge, but 18-24 would've been better, smaller.
The next problem that I have to solve is an insulation issue. The LPs are not very well insulated and when one is flashed, the other is picking up current through the mounting bracket. :(
Any ideas on how to insulate the turnsignal from the bracket? I've got nylon washers on either side of the bracket and I thought that would be enough... I was wrong. :rant

Got'cha:thumb
I've used the posi-locks and they do work well.
I'm not sure about the isolation problem (I'm a metals guy not electrical) but it sounds like you may have an exposed wire sending juice somehow? maybe inside the signal?:confused wish I could be more help.
Lee955i 06-11-2004, 12:39 PM Double check your wiring to make sure you don't have a 12v source hooked up to an earth. If not, youll have to insulate the stud where it goes through the bracket. Should be able to get a nylon sleeve at Lowes or Ace in the hardware section. You may have to drill the bracket out larger, though.
Had to get those damn al-u-minium ones, didn't ya:crackup :nanana :nanana .
Cheers, Lee S.
Reyndogg 06-11-2004, 12:55 PM those are probably the ugliest marker lights out there save the "carbon look flush mounts" they sell :barf
I can't believe you'd put them on your bike....IMO stock would be better than those fuggin things :(
...my .02 anyway...
Hawker 06-11-2004, 01:18 PM Had the same problem with LP signals on my Hawk.
Threw them away, and bought some K&S signals. Problem solved.
clutchNthrottle 06-11-2004, 02:06 PM I tired LP turn signals on my Sprint SS. Nothing but problems. Blew fuses, rattled loose, blew bulbs, people complained they couldn't see them. Not worth the $40 in my book. My Daytona still sports the factory blikers and a virgin rear mud guard...:shrug
Daytomann 06-11-2004, 07:35 PM Those are OK Sean but the The Watsen designs are the way to go if you want the aluminum look....
SilverSurfer 06-11-2004, 07:54 PM To be honest, I wasn't all that crazy about the Watsen Design look. :shrug Besides, these were free. :D
Reyndogg 06-11-2004, 10:18 PM and, sadly, you got what you paid for :(
dont do that to your bike man, it's not worth it :shake
[resident LP marker light hater]
:p
Lee955i 06-12-2004, 07:45 AM Stockers all the way baby:nanana (flushmounts on the front though )
Cheers, Lee S.
rbrsddn 06-12-2004, 12:57 PM I've got the Watsen Design signals, and they look good, but I'm not all that impressed by their brightness level.

+1
SilverSurfer 06-12-2004, 07:31 PM Well, I've finally got them sorted. I ended up buying a set of 3/8" vinyl grommets from Home Depot. I drilled out my plate/signal bracket with my 1/2" drill bit. Once the grommets were inserted, insulating the signals, everything worked as advertised.
These "market lights" are actually very bright. The bulb is near the outer most tip and it shows when they blink, but they are definitely bright. I like the look of them.
So, in the end, if someone else wants to go this route, buy a set of 18-24 posi-locks. Buy a set of 3/8" vinyl grommets (in the electrical connectors section of your local hardware store). Drill out your turnsignal bracket with a 1/2" bit. Insert the grommets. Cut your turnsignal wires at the clips, strip about 3/8" of wire casing, insert into the posi-locks. Move onto the next item.

Free huh? And worth every penny you paid for them! :twofinger
Myself, I wouldn't bother, no matter how much bling factor they may have.
If I drop my bike onto my cheap plastic stock turn signals, they break.
If I drop my bike onto my solid Al-U-minium LP turn signals, my expensive bodywork breaks.
Fielder's choice.
Hinesy 06-15-2004, 08:01 AM I'm glad to hear you were stomping around your garage in a blind rage while I was strafing VTs best backroads SS... :redflip
