Vandals target Dunlop memorial
Joey Dunlop was known as "king of the road"
A memorial garden to Northern Ireland motorcycle legend Joey Dunlop has been damaged in a vandal attack.
Police believe a sledge hammer was used to smash a granite plaque in the garden in Ballymoney, County Antrim, sometime between midnight on Wednesday and 0800 BST on Thursday.
Dunlop, a five-times world champion and one of the province's greatest sporting heroes, died in a racing accident in Estonia in 2000.
Joey Dunlop's mother Mary said: "I'm just so angry that anyone would do the like of this, as Joey made no differ either to the rich, the poor, the Catholic or the Protestant.
"So there is no cause to do it on him now.
"They are only scum, anyone who would do the like of that."
Memorial was smashed into many pieces
The Mayor of Ballymoney, Frank Campbell, said he was disgusted at the incident particularly during North West 200 races week.
"This garden is a memorial to Joey, to one of the greats of road racing, and we are very sorry to see this happen," he said.
"We are very, very upset that this has happened because it was one of the places in the town that we thought would be left alone because of the greatness of the man that it is dedicated to."
Dunlop won in the Isle of Man TT races a record 26 times and was dubbed "king of the road".
Police have described the incident as disgraceful and an affront to the memory of one of Northern Ireland's greatest sporting heroes, and want anyone who has any information about the incident to contact them.
North Antrim SDLP assembly member Sean Farren said: "Joey Dunlop's memory is revered by people from all traditions and backgrounds in Ballymoney and the surrounding area.
"This mindless vandalism is simply disgraceful and diminishes us all."
Sinn Fein assembly member Philip McGuigan said: "Those responsible for the attack on the memorial garden to Joey Dunlop need to reflect long and hard about their actions.
"This attack has caused widespread anger and annoyance in the community and is without doubt causing extreme distress to the Dunlop family."
