Well I'm back into biking.

I picked up this 02 919 yesterday...4200 miles, never been down.

I spent some time riding around today getting used to being on two wheels, and in spite of how much I love the bike, this exhaust smell is killing me.

I'm 6'3" and it's pretty bad.

I'm willing to spend some money to take care of it, but I want to know what will help.

Some CF Yosh pipes are looking very good, but will it solve the problem completely?

Any help would be appreciated.

Get a used full exhaust from a Honda 900RR and with very little modification it will work. I've seen them go for around $200-$250 on ebay. Go to:

http://www.geocities.com/honda919rider/

and look in "Files" and you will see instructions and pictures of the conversion.

When I replaced my stock pipes with erion slip ons, the smell pretty much disappeared. I am 6' 2"... Before that I tried different gas, extensions for my original pipes and extensions on cored stock pipes. It was the aftermarket pipes that worked for me.

thanks for all of the replies so far.

Something is really wrong with this bike. Even when I just run it and step anywhere close to behind it, I'm overwhelmed by the smell. It gave me a headache today and made me feel dizzy.

The ends of my cans are all black with carbon.

I am looking at getting an aftermarket set of pipes...will I NEED a PCIII as well?

WOuld the PCIII alone help?

Got a link to the "project site"?
yeah...in my signature smartazz :redflip

and yes nee...you're bike is likely running a bit rich

as for getting dizzy standing behind the bike, i'd go see your ear/nose/throat specialist, see if you're coming down w/ something...standing near any motorcycle exhaust for a brief period of time shouldn't upset your equilibrium

and no, you don't "need" a PC3 just because you purchased slipons...

buy a pc3 for smoothing out the throttle response and maybe leaning the mixture out some...

I'm not sure why I felt dizzy, but the smell coming from the exhaust was much stronger and far-reaching than any bike I've ever been near.

So...at this point it looks like I might invest in some new pipes.

I think I'm between the Satos and the Yosh....I'm not looking to make much more power, and from what I understand the Yosh's sound level is more reasonable.

Any recommendations?

satos have never been known for being "quiet"

yoshi's have several varieties of baffles available (race, street etc.) so you have a better chance of tuning the sound level

the satos actually had a slight design mod after about a year to make them a little less obnoxious (smaller core) and even made an attempt to address the dreaded "stink" by extending the end caps a bit...

and yeah, some 919's are runnin rich enough you gotta wonder if it's a 2stroke when you smell it (ok, not really that bad, but you do notice it) i thought that was pretty much limited to the 02's...i suspect the 03-05's have had a minor ECU update

Janet from the yahoo group reported great success when Honda modified her hornet to have a CAT installed and the associated ECU mod...you can reach her on the yahoo group and she'll provide more detail

honda919rider eliminiated the issue w/ the single sided exhaust...many have made this mod and are happy

several folks have installed their own endcaps (angled downward) and report significant changes in exhaust odor on clothes after a ride

and finally yes, installing a PC3 and having it tuned to a target A/F ratio will likely lessen the rich running that contributes to the problem

other exhaust options?
MORIWAKI (longest cans out there for the 9r, nice mellow sound, look great, angled end caps)

Neetones, where are you located? I ask because one of the things that i did notice was that it was really only on damp/humid days that the stink would become an issue. I remember when i was researching all of the other 919 sites for solutions to this problem that some of the guys in wetter area's (wash state/canada) were complaining a little more than others. Ever since swithing my pipes the smell has gone away. Not sure why but it did. As for sound, the erions are actually very quiet I think for aftermarket pipes, but have a deep enough rumble to make them nice.

+1 to what michaelrm69 said. The price is pretty darn nice as well. I ordered mine from starcycle.com and they installed in <30 minutes. The Black satin finish goes really well with the 919's looks IMO. Plus they are a pretty short can so it doesn't disrupt the look like some of the others do.

thanks for all the info.

I'm in Santa Barbara, CA...it's fairly humid here but not enough to make that much of an impact I think.

I'll look into those Erions. The only thing I don't like about the Satos is that they seem to be more round than oval. And loud isn't what I'm going for.

Microns would be great...too bad they cost $1000.

Thanks everyone.

I'm just about to take the leap into a pair of Satos. I'll report back if I get them.
