With a 12 and the dealer holding a 6, you hit. The 6 is a bust card but a 12 won't beat much if the dealer doesn't bust.
FYI, there are cards for blackjack that show you exactly how to play the odds. Many casinos will let you use the strategy cards while you play because even with perfect strategy, the house still has an advantage even though it's a small one. The only way to put the odds in your favor is to count cards. Here's an example:

I was wondering if it's a trick question tho, but Tyler made it pretty clear!
BTW, making money at casinos is getting more difficult, since a lot of people have the same idea...actually, everyone who enters a casino has that idea! Problem is, once a cardshark gets through a casino, they usually have him banned and rules get changed in the process to prevent another occurance, so now most two deck black jack games no longer allow you to double down, and cap the max at 5 times minimum.....
I don't play blackjack at all...my lil brother did it to pay his bills for awhile- he did aiite but had to find a different casino every time.

I did pretty well at the casino. My sister and her (now) husband got married in vegas in November, and we all sat down at a blackjack table. I got up to $265 before I decided to quit 
But I'd say hit. Like Tyler Durden said, a 12 won't beat much unless the dealer busts. And depending on what your 12 is made of, there are still about 20 cards out of just one deck that could make the dealer not bust. (aces through fives, minus his six and whatever you have) and even more that you could pull to not bust.

If it was a sure thing it wouldn't be called gambling. Don't gamble with money you aren't prepared to lose. Words to live by when you're in the casinos.Nick Name said:
Blackjack is a great game if you play smart. It has the lowest house edge of any table game in the casino. I think the only thing with lower house odds is video poker, but I don't know how to play that with perfect strategy. Craps has pretty good odds too, if you play with max odds and only make pass line and come bets.

Its never a sure thing thats why they call it gambling. If you don't have the money to lose then you shouldn't play. If you do play have a set max that you are willing to lose before you go in and stick to it. Do not try to win your money back. Go home and come back another day when you have some more money your willing it give away.Nick Name said:

You want a table where the dealer has to hit on a 16. Soft 16 would be even better (gives them one more pair of cards that they have to hit on.) And if you want to win big, you have to bet big. I know it sucks, and you don't always win, but that's the way to do it. I started with $100, got down to $5, then worked my way back up. (bets were $5 minimum)
When you have a 15, that's a tough call. Look at what the dealer has showing. Always assume there's a 10 underneath it. If he has a 15 as well, you should probably stay, because they have to hit, and odds are that they'll bust. And of course, nothing's guaranteed.

Another thought - Find one of those games that you can play on your computer... I think microsoft had a game pack with "dr. blackjack" or something in it. Seriously, practice on that. It warns you when you should hit or stay, and gives advice. Get good, then go out and play for real.
Oh yeah, and you can always ask the dealer what the house would do if they had your hand. They'll tell you.

Like you said "most times" thats not a sure thing. I know a guy that would take how at least $150 per night a few times a night for a few weeks playing it and then he wasn't winning as much anymore. I don't think he goes anymore. Go down with him some time and watch him play. Even try a free online one or something and just to see what its like.Nick Name said:

This wasn't my hand...it was my roomates that has NEVER played Balckjack before...let alone at a Casino. I took him there with a few of our guests for the "Best Buffet in town" :laughing They wanted to gamble a little before and after eating :laughing :shake
I told the dude(my roomate) to HOLD on the 12 (10 and 2) with the dealer showing a 6 card.
He HIT...got a 5 card...then I told him after almost slapping the dude in the face to hold..the other 3 people almost jumped outta their seats when he hit on a 12. He did hold, with a 17.
Dealer fliped the house cards...it was a 10 card(6 + 10= 16)...house has to HIT on a 16. Next hit was a 10. Dealer busts.
Although my roomate won the hand...I told the IDIOT that he was LUCKY and has beginers LUCK. The fool thinks he played it right.
