Boston Police Partner With State Police On Weekend Sobriety Checkpoint

The Boston Police Department, in partnership with the Massachusetts State
Police, will hold a press conference on Friday to announce plans for a
"Sobriety Checkpoint" this weekend within the City of Boston.
Boston Police Commissioner Kathleen M. O'Toole, State Police Col. Thomas G.
Robbins, Philip Weiser, the New England Regional Administrator for the
National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and Jessica Hanley, with the
Governor's Highway Safety Bureau, will be on hand to talk about this
weekend's sobriety checks. The press conference is set for 12:30 p.m. at
Boston Police Headquarters, One Schroeder Plaza, Boston.
Both Boston Police and the Massachusetts State Police will staff the
checkpoint from Friday, Dec. 17 through Saturday Dec. 18. The Boston Police
Department also will conduct saturation patrols throughout the city during
the holiday season from Dec. 17 through Jan. 3. Both the checkpoint and the
patrols are fund through grant money provided by the Massachusetts
Governor's Highway Safety Bureau.
In November, Boston Police conducted a "Click it or Ticket" program
enforcing the state's seatbelt laws using another grant funded by the
Governor's Highway Safety Bureau. During that enforcement program, which ran
from Nov. 15 through Nov. 28, 938 vehicles were stopped and 851 citations
were issued. Of those citations, 392 were warnings and 459 were complaints
- 428 of those were for violation of the seat belt law. In addition, seven
arrests were made for violations of the auto law.
