I don't normally do New Years Resolutions, but this one is something I think I can do, and something I really need to do. A few months ago I found out that I have degenerative discs in my spine. Some days its so bad, getting out of bed and being comfortable is a challenge. I can't afford to have surgery (well, a cortizone injection but they have to put me under at the hospital) and my doc at the Emory Spine Center said I needed to do something to lose weight quickly. I think this challenge is exactly what I need to get my ass in gear. There are several locations in Atlanta doing the challenge. I think we'll be going to the Discovery Store at Lenox Mall on Jan. 10th. Included is a 3 month free membership to Bally's to help you out. You'll also get to see a Dietician and that is another reason for me doing this. My insurance doesn't have dieticians and my PCP doc told me to go see one, and I'm shit outta luck otherwise so this is my chance to see one - for free!

So, if your resolution was to start getting in shape, this may be good for you, too.

I tried the low fat route many times and it didn't work for me. I started Atkins the second week of February and lost a total of 70 pounds in about 5 months. I did all of this without working out. If I had worked out I would have lost that amount of weight much faster. My weight loss has stopped for the last few months because I have been eating too many carbs. :shake I have a bout 15 more pounds to lose so I just got my home gym back in order. :thumb

I agree, lowfat diets don't work well. I have heard many good things about the Atkins diet. A couple of guys I know have lost major amounts of weight on it and are happy because it isn't a "fad" diet, but a "lifesyle change". My problem is that I'm also diabetic so finding things with a proper balance is difficult for me. I am so glad that I will have access to a dietician because I really need to speak with one to get full control over what I should and shouldn't be eating. I've already got a gym partner and she's just as excited as I am. I haven't looked at the recipes on the website (plan on doing that after the weigh-in) so I don't know if it's all low fat type of stuff, but they have success stories on there that make me want to get in shape even more :)

That makes all the difference right there in my opinion. Having someone to work out with you helps a ton.

Thank you! If I feel so inclined, I may keep this thread going throughout the three months so I can show my progress :)

I agree. I also think the reason I feel I can continue this moreso than other diets/changes is because it's a competition. I'm not a competitive person, really, but to think for just a second I had a chance at losing more than someone else, if i just tried a little harder, will get me going in the morning to the gym, I think. I don't know this gym partner (we read the same local m/c board and I posted a thread about this and she said she'd like to join me) so hopefully we will make good partners. If not, I'll always have my CD player :) Music gets me going, too. <g>
