My 2001 F4i gets to about 256F before the check engine light comes on and continues to climb. I don't ever hear my fan kick on either. Its probably the temp sensor or thermostat (are they the same thing?). How do I troubleshoot these components and where are they located? And what is the most likely culprit? Any help appreciated.

1) Check the fuse spades for corrosion. 2) Check the fan temperature switch connections located at the radiator.

could be a fuse, could be a sensor, could be a bad wire and if you dont quit heating it up to 256 you wont have to worry about riding that bike long. :shake
get a service manual and it will explain how to check these things :rolleyes
