Ok guys and girls,

I may be relocating to the Ft Lauderdale area for a job. I'll know after next weekend. What I'm looking for is the following. :)

What should I absolutely check out on my recruiting trip?
What are the preferred places to live and median home value?
What are the "hot spots" as far as social scenes?
Where are the Florida tracks for motorcycle racing?
What do you "HATE" about the Ft Lauderdale area?
What are the people like? Laid back? High strung? Yuppie? Etc...

For those that don't know me. I'm a 27 year old, single-straight guy who enjoys outdoor activities. That should help with what kind of person you're dealing with. :thumb

Thanks!
Nico

Sorry for the longwindedness...here's my $.02

I moved here 10 years ago and told myself I'd be here a year and then move on....well...that was 1996 and I am still here. Its too bad it took me 3 years to buy a house as the market here IS out of control...it is slowing down, but there will be no Bubble-Bursting anytime soon. SF Homes are $400K+ if you dont want to live in the ghetto. TH's are a bit more affordable...2/2 or 3/2 for the mid to high $200's, garage space will cost another $15-18K for a single (depending on the community)

Your new job is in Ft Laud, proper? Do you have an address? There are many great communites to live in down here. My roommate and I are realtors so getting you into a place (rental or owned) is easy. Need to know your budget limits and the type of place your are really looking for. Will this be a permanent move? I am assuming so.

As far as racing, there are 3 tracks we use regularly.... Homestead, Moroso and Jennings. All three have track days, generally on the Friday in conjunction with the racing weekends...Gummo looks like he has posted the CCS schedule for the year. Homestead and Moroso require a CCS, WERA, USRA or other competition license to get on the track but Jennings is open to attend without the license. Daytona is available to run CCS, WERA, USRA the weekend before Bike Week. Its more costly than the others. I will be headed there this year, even though its out of the SoFla series, I just want to race it. Roebling Road is the other alternative track. its in Savannah GA and is the same distance as Jennings by about 20 minutes...they are both about 7 hours from here.

I like Homestead the best...garages, power, its a NASCAR track to start with, recently repaved, nicest one here IMO
Jennings is 13 turns, most all of them Left Handers...with a few Rights sprinkled in. No elevation changes and a few bad-patch jobs but overall a nice track.
Roebling Road is 9 turns, 7 of which are right handers. Hot showers are available at the track, no garages or power sources but a nice change of direction from Jennings
Moroso is my least favorite of all of these. Old track, BAD patchwork, more people have died at this track than any other, ZERO shade...although they do broadcast the tower transmissions over the FM radio dial.

Night life is abundant here. Everynight, somewhere in the city is a bar that has a ladies night. So it can be a target-rich-environment depending on your availability and needs. As far as the gay-thing goes...its seems to be more MetroSexual than anything here. SoBe is definately gay but everywhere else its just a sprinkling of everything.... gay/straight/*******/Haitian/Cuban/Puerto Rican/Caucasian/sport bike/cruiser/Harley's/Topless beaches/nude beaches....you name it and its here. Just get with a group of good people and they'll show you the ropes here.

Many of my friends are from the SoFL Forums and will be more than willing to assist you in your transition.

Thanks dude. So I'm taking it that 10 years means you liked it? :laughing

It's not a new job yet, but barring a complete fuck up on my onsite interviews, I will most likely be getting an offer after next week (my interview is on the 16th).

851 West Cypress Creek Road
Fort Lauderdale, Florida 33309

Permanent move? Hmmm. Hard to say anything is permanent in my life. This is the longest I've lived anywhere (6 years). I grew up in the military.

I'm already used to the high prices. I live in Seattle. :laughing. The house I bought 2 years ago for $299 is now around $430 I think. :shake

Im about to start my novice race seasons here in WA/OR as part of (WMRRA/OMRRA) so I dont have my race license yet. Im guessing the novice school for CCS has already taken place? How far is Road Atlanta away from FTL?

So I'm guessing the night life scene out there is very "dressy/trendy"? Seattle's is pretty laid back (jeans and hats are acceptable at most places). I'm not much into club/bar thing on a regular basis. More into riding, bbq's, hanging out with a good group of people that like to have fun. :shrug

I'm basically trying to compile a list of things to check out when I come at the end of next week for my interviews. :)

Thanks for the info so far, keep it coming. :thumb

Military kid here as well....

My home is exactly 2 miles west of your potential office...I'm at NW 31st and Cypress Creek, in Palm Aire, you'll be at Powerline and Cypress Creek. Grid City, MW/NE/SW/SE. Broward Blvd is the North/South divider and Andrews is the East/West, its pretty easy to fugure out.

School for CCS is pretty much at every race weekend, just depends on whom you want to take it from, but always avail for getting the license. Road Atlanta is 9+ hours, straight up the I-75, just south of Atlanta. Now there's a track!! Someday I want to make the trek and run it. Purpose-built and fast!

Nightlife here is VERY casual. If its a beach location, shirts and shoes are not required. In the summer heat, many bars will let you take your shirt off as well. Nicer clubs are still casual and there are a few high-end-joints, but they are more scarce than abundant.

Many parks for BBQ's both inland as well as near or at the beaches but most homes have pools so back-yard-events I'd say are more the way it happens.

There is a huge variety of places to go out down here. You can go as dressed up or as dressed down as you want. You'll find good crowds at each place. Las Olas in Ft. Lauderdale has some cool bars where jeans are fine (a couple of places have no T-shirt rules). Whenever we go there, we hop from bar to bar for a change in scenery.

Beach place on Ft. Lauderdale Beach (imagine that) heats up in the summer, but is relatively dead this time of year.

The Hard Rock Seminole Indian Casino has some hot nights at the clubs there but I've noticed that it is hit or miss.

South Beach down in Miami is a 40 minute drive and you've got everything down there as well.

Housing market down here is f'n expensive! We're starting to see a cool down and prices are stagnating/slowly dropping. There are lots of new developments though so you could get a nice new house for what you can sell your house up there for. Its all about where you want to be. I'd recommed living as far east as possible, as everything happens out east.

BTW, everything you heard about flat, curveless roads is true. You have to drive far to get to some "twisties".
