Just upgraded my system..... been wanting to for over a year now and finally found some good deals!

I had a Polk RM 5400 system I bought at circuit shitty, but I've upgraded to Definitive Technology. Got BP2006TL Fronts, C/L/R 2300 Center, and BP-6B rears. Man!!! All I can say is its too much for my apt! This baby's gonna rock the 'new house' !! :D

If you've never heard Definitive Technology, I suggest you go demo a set!! You'll walk outta that store with a set and a :biggrin on your face!! :D

While I don't have any really "high-end" stuff, I do have a setup I am happy with.

Just got a JVC i-art 48" flat panel running thru a Awia DV75.

Man, I love to sit back and crank up the sound for hard hitting movies like Fellowship of the Ring or the like!

Makes the X-box a blast too!

I spent way too much for my current system. That was my last winter dumb purchase... Now we've moved on to the next one listed in the Open forum. :D Of course we are too stupid to pay off one thing before we buy another... Gotta love the American Way? :laughing

I was already looking at upgrading the receiver, but I think it will do. I'm relatively happy with everything I bought, I just need a place to put the components... On top of the TV doesn't cut it.

What I have as of now....

55" Mitsubishi WS55209 HDTV widescreen
Yamaha RX-V1200 receiver
Boston Acoustics VR975 mains, VR920 Center and VRMX rears
Sony DVP-NS700P DVD player
And of course way too much on A/V filters, cords and other things. :(

I need to look into getting something to work with my new dish reciever...it's got an optical out jack for dolby digital, but I ain't got nuttin' to plug that bad boy into....

Anyone have and suggestions for a relatively low cost system that'll work...I don't need fancy, just want a basic setup with front/rear/sub for watching my PPV movies ;)

I have a 32" Sony VEGA that I really like, and the Sony DVD and VCR...

Don't forget the little Kenwood compact stereo...with a non-working CD Player

Me personally... I already have a surround I'm happy with and a measly 27" screen. What I WANT is a nice large high quality projector.

Screw you all.... ain't nothing like a 10' plus screen to watch your movies, play your games, and check out your porn on. :p

Kick ass Brian. Definetive is some great stuff. My bro has a DT system. I myself have a dated system but I dont watch much movies or TV anyways. My speakers are currently DCM Time Frames. When I get a chance I want to upgrade to Energys. Good sounding speakers and reasonably priced.

Heh, IMO nothing is reasonably priced in this "hobby". The prices are just insane, considering I spent more for what I showed in those pictures then I did on my Blackbird and nearly what I did on my R1.

There are plenty of nice systems to check out.. But suggesting speakers is nearly impossible. Everyone's ears are different. But Sony makes a decent all in one system for 1k, Boston Acoustics makes a few decent systems, really they all do. Unfortunately you have to get out there and listen to them and even then you don't know how they will sound in your living space.

My system was awesome in my old Duplex but in our house it doesn't seem the same. I have to sink some time into rearranging the speakers.... Apparently speaker placement is very important, kinda like setting your suspension. ;)

I'll post some pics of my stuff this weekend. My setup is:

  • Mitsubishi 50" Analog TV with 2 matching Mitsubishi racks.
  • Definitive Tech BP2006TL, C/L/R2300, BP-6B
  • Sony STRDE885 6.1 (matrix) receiver (dont need 6.1 really, my room isnt big enough)
  • Sony DVD player
  • Sony PS2
  • Sony VCR (not sure why, I dont own a damn VHS tape?)
  • Lutron Remote lighting
  • THX Monster Wire
  • Coming soon - Adcom ACE-315 Power Conditioner/Filter
  • Coming soon - Universal Remote MX-500 Theater Master
If I upgraded my receiver, Id probably go with a Marantz 7200. That baby is sweet as hell!

I just dont have enough room for this shit in my apt. It also sucks that my neighbor has the same work schedule as I do so I cant listen to my shit the way I want to. Damn I want my house to be done!

Karl - I love B&W speakers!! IMO they are the BEST speaker made for stereo listening.....

For the money, you cant beat the Polk RM systems. If you'll look on ebay, you can find one around 300 bux with a sub. If you can try to get the PSW350 (10 inch) sub....it sounds better than the psw250. Sony probably has the best deal on a receiver with the strde685. Its around 250 bux with dolby digital and DTS sound decoding.

Wanna see what a 60k speaker looks like? You have to have 4 friggin amps to power the som-bitch!

Sony makes a pyramid looking speakers that are about that much also.

It's insane that there are people out there that pay for these things...

Funny thing is those Nautilus's only got voted a 4.21 out of 5 from owners of them.

Anyone buying this stuff watch out for the addon stuff... Like the filters, cables and what not.

Like this is what I bought, I think I was on crack that night... For 200 bills.

Then the speaker cables, component cables, sub cables, optical cables etc... Probably cost somewhere in the 1500 dollar range... They honestly have quite the racket going for people like me who don't know much.

Eyespy at SBN was big into this stuff, and the fallacy's of cabling.

I was looking at Monster and Panamax conditioners, but I was wanting to get away form MOV based surge protection. The new Adcom have a different technology that instead of sacrificing itself when a surge happens, it harness' the power then releases it out of the ground circuit. There is nothing wrong with MOV based protection, its just you dont know when its gonna work and when its done working. If they made replaceable MOV or the damn thing would just quit working, it wouldnt be as bad.

I know all of them still have their 10k to 5 million warrantee, but who wants to go thru that shit?

I never knew a thing about them.. They are a one use thing? That would suck for sure.

There's just not enough money on the planet to be able to play in this segment... Not only that but it seems I actually listen to music less and less each year... It's just movies.

The MOV based unit are not just a one time thing, although theoretically they could be. Each time the unit takes a surge it destoys part of the MOV unit. Naturally, the bigger the surge, the bigger 'chunk' taken out of the MOV. This is ok, but the thing is the unit still functions 100% when the MOV is completely destroyed. Think of it like a fuse box that cuts off, but the power is still going. MOV is short for Metal Oxide Varistor. Basically think of it as the 'fuse'.

Like I said before that is the weakness of these units. If they made then so you could buy a new MOV chip and replace it every month or so then it wouldnt be as bad. Simply put, you dont know when or if you equip is being protected. Even with the new circuitry Adcom offers, the unit still gets damaged. But, after the unit is damaged - it no longer works. So this way you at least know your gear is protected or not.

I just got a 700W RCA system last month, all I really wanted it for was to be able to get 5.1 digital from my DVD's and some games and it's been great so far. And besides, new for $140 it was to good to pass up! (reg: $499)

It does what I want.

Hmmm, well I haven't really gone "all out" (yet?) but for right now I'm a Sony person. :)

60" Sony rear projection TV (HTDV ready)
Sony A4 DSS
Sony 5-Disc DVD/CD/VCD
Sony Dual Cassette (OLD....but still works!)
Sony Laserdisc (remember those?)
and a Philips TiVo unit (love these, everyone should have one!)
all piped into a Sony ES receiver driving Atlantic Technologies 4.5s

I have a Sharp XV-ZW99U that I'm not using (don't have a good room for a projector) if anyone wants to drop me a PM. :)

EDIT: Dug up a photo. :)
