I received a ticket for "running a red" in Houston,TX and have a court date coming up very soon. I have an out of state license and was wondering if I am still eligible for defensive driving? Can I request a trial by judge at the initial arraignment - if I can and do, will I then have to show up at court at a later date or will the trial commence immediately?

Don't know about Texas, but most places let you do defensive driving classes. All they really care about is the money.

Though I don't know about the rules. If they'll let you do it do the defensive driving course online since you're out of state, might make it easier/more convienient for you.

Beaten to the punch...

You can do Internet courses on defensive driving. That should fit the bill.

If you request a trial by jury/judge, you will have to reset the court date and return (usually 6 months later). Deferred Adjudication or Defensive Dricing can be requested on the spot. I doubt they would give you Deferred since you're out of state, but Defensive Driving should be no problem.
