Well, after three days, it's not the horror I thought it would be.
To start, my job is that of Case Manager for Wise Co., VA Rural Association Development Association, Inc. (RADA) adult program.
In short, the Virginia Employment Commission is now becoming part of the Virginia Workforce program. Someone comes in and wants education/skill training for a better job and is poor enough, we can help with tuition, transportation, school supplies, etc.
Most of the job is going to be paperwork and documentation. However, it's not too bad. I was really concerned because of the notorious politics going on at the Wise Co. office I was warned about, but the office manager (not my "boss") stopped by yesterday, and talked for 1.5 hours with him and the WIA coordinator.
I'm not sure what the friction was in the past, but he and I agreed that the best thing was to have people on UI or welfare working WHILE going to school. Of course, the angle RADA has is that we don't want them to get a job UNTIL AFTER we have them entered into the program (if they qualify). To take someone unemployed and have them working makes us look good, but if we get them into a job first then we have to have them in a better job for our numbers to look good.
Otherwise, the guy seemed to take a liking to me, and that might be why I got the job. The woman who interviewed me from RADA thought I'd fit in better than other staff they had.
Needless to say, gossip and rumor in the workplace is rampant and a big part of why there has been problems in the past.
I do wish the pay was better, but it'll take a couple of months to see how far my paycheck actually goes.
