Austin man killed in San Marcos wreck
Thursday, August 28, 2008, 09:04 AM

From the City of San Marcos:

A 21-year old Austin man was killed late Wednesday, August 27, in a three-vehicle wreck on I-35 involving two motorcycles and an automobile.

Zachary Glenn Wilcox (DOB 05-06-1987) was pronounced dead by Justice of the Peace Margie Hernandez following the 10:21 p.m. collision near the 208 mile marker on northbound I-35. She has ordered an autopsy.

According to the preliminary investigation, Wilcox was driving a 2008 Kawasaki Ninja motorcycle in a group of motorcycle riders when he apparently rear-ended a Nissan Pathfinder driven by Martin Palma, age 43, of Dallas.

A second motorcycle driven by Ricardo Ortega, age 24, of Buda collided with the driver’s side door of the Pathfinder. The car went out of control and struck concrete barriers, rolled over and came to rest in the center of the interstate.

Ortega was taken to Brackenridge Hospital in Austin while Palma was taken to Central Texas Medical Center for treatment of injuries.

San Marcos Police continue their investigation into the fatality.

So, he rear ended it... then the next rider struck the drivers' door??!? Holy crap.

:(

The combination of the collision and the shock of it all probably made the guy in the Pathfinder swerve, whereupon the other cyclist either wasn't braking or (more likely) chose the wrong path of evasion.

As usual, it's all speculation.
Regardless, RIP to the rider and hopefully the other one recovers quickly.

SAN MARCOS

Austin man dies in I-35 wreck

Zachary Glenn Wilcox, 21, died Wednesday night in a collision on Interstate 35 involving two motorcycles and a car.

Police say Wilcox was driving a 2008 Kawasaki Ninja motorcycle with a group of other motorcycle riders when a Nissan Pathfinder driven by Martin Palma, 43, of Dallas, rear-ended Wilcox.

Another motorcycle, driven by Ricardo Ortega, 24, of Buda, collided with the side of Palma's vehicle, causing it to hit the concrete barriers and roll over, according to police. Ortega was taken to University Medical Center at Brackenridge in Austin, and Palma was taken to Central Texas Medical Center with injuries. Their conditions were unknown.

No charges have been filed.

Maybe they're going to wait until they finish their investigation? Better to do it right once than to press charges and change/rescind them once the full details of the incident came to light.

RIP to the fallen rider.
