With the world security climate being as it is, I thought this photo was very poignant.

If'n you have an image that capsulizes today's world, let's see it!

Have a happy and SAFE New Year's, everyone.

its like some of those old Sci-fi movies coming true
This picture is also taken from the Statue of Liberty. Notice the buildings in the background.
Reminds me of 'The Running Man' - where the US was almost a police-state kind of situation. :(

Welcome to the 21st century.
Sureal.
:(
I don't know about you guys...but seeing the armed soldiers around town and at the airports makes me feel ALOT safer than before...

And that artillery in the pic makes me feel secure actually. I'm glad we have men like that guarding us as we go about our everyday business....
I agree.

But I also think it's sad that it has to be this way.
Sure, I'd like to live in a fantasy world where everyone gets along. It's the way things should be; the way I like it to be, for our children.
It's VERY sad, but as long as those guys or threaghts are out there, we need to secure what we have. Imagine how it must be to live in Israel...they have it way worse..:(
The job of terrorists is to make you change your way of life. It would seem that they've succeeded.
I don't know why, but I have this huge fear that the next terrorists target is going to be a large venue sporting event, such as the Super Bowl.:shake

I have a friend in Jerusalem who I haven't heard from in a year. I worry and think of him all the time.

No the job of a terrorist is to utterly and completely destroy you!

Oh and Longrider....man I hope you are not comparing a police officer trying to protect the citizenry from terrorists with Nazi soldiers?

I always think of it like this. Instead of us being happy and feeling safe, we are afraid, and uncomfortable. They want us to think of them, their discomfort, the violence and terror they have experienced - they want us to be as unhappy and fearful as they are.

We are about one step away from a complete police state. One very similar to Nazi Germany. Germany had a very successful police state. The country ran like a machine. They crossed the line, however. Ive been in Mexico several times. It is very normal to see police officers there carrying loading M16s. It is a little strange to see it here. We are by no means Nazi Germany, but he picture is familiar.
And by the way,,,,,, the Nazis were only trying to protect the homeland, and the people as well. :confused

Dont take me wrong on my post here. We arent Nazi Germany. The picture made me think though. What was Nazi Germany like early on, as the government took more and more control? They used peoples fear, and patriotism, to assist in capturing control. They pushed building a strong Germany until it became a crime to want anything else. They used fear to build a stronger military, even as the people couldnt afford one. Right to the end, the German people were affraid to denounce the government, because they were affraid of persecution. Safety and security are a great thing, but they arent worth selling your freedom for. Just me thinking out loud.

As long as people keep thinking and talking like that, you won't be in danger of following in their footsteps.

By waging a campaign for world domination or by setting up a police state?

Where'd you get this pearl of wisdom? The "job of terrorists" (or their goal) is to kill you. They could give a shit less about you changing your way of life. Everytime I hear someone say "If XXXX happens, the terrorists have won," I want to smack the everliving shit out of them. No they haven't cock munch. They have won if you and every other non-Muslim (be they American, Jewish, or just a little less fanatical) are dead. They could give a shit less about police in our streets, strip searches at airports, or turning the US into a police state. They don't hate the 'happiness and freedom' and all that shit we have, they hate us. Please people, for the sake of half-informed and intelligent society, stop jumping on the "if you do this, the terrorists have already won" bullshit media bandwagon.
