Times Square Tonight

Y'all think its gonna be safe this year? I just heard this Congressman from Connecticut on TV telling people not to go anywhere near it because of the serious threat for terror to happen. I sure hope nothing happens tonight, about 3/4 of a million people will be there. I can only imagine the security in New York right now. :rolleyes

I'm sure it'll be fine. I think the 'threat' is enough for them....they get to sit in their cave & snicker because they freaked all of us out.

ETA:

Threat or no threat, the closest you'll ever see me get to TS on NYE is New Haven......no way I'm dealing with all those fuggin people....
Nothing will happen tonight. Go out and have fun.
It always seems that threats are highest when a crowd of people come together at a certain occasion...I wonder where these threats come from...I mean, are the AlKaida (sp?) actually the ones saying "tell the US people to BEWARE!" Or is it the Government that just wants us all on alert just INCASE?

the government claims to have "intelligence..."

I've been saying for years that they have none :nanana
I personally think that Congressman is a coward and Mayor Bloomburg obviously is telling people to come out and party. I think the media likes scaring people personally. ;)
Sounds like Las Vegas on NYE 1999. Mom was freaking out because there seemed to be some sort of threat. They canceled fireworks but it was a huge bash and nothing happened.

I seriously think that was one of the best New Year’s I ever had.
:crackup

edit: the comic Jay posted :laughing
I don't think that there is going to be much going on there. The level of situational awareness for the city is too high.

You can get something small in there, a grenade perhaps, but there is still too much physical separation between the people and where the vehicles can be for an effective detonation of a weapon that is in a vehicle.

My brother is going to the city and will be downtown, and not in Times Square and other than him having more to drink than he should, I'm not overly concerned for his well being.

We will have to see how it comes out. There are greater risks outside of the metro areas than within. The effectiveness of the hit on New York and DC was because of the fact that there was no awareness in the public realm.

Still keeping my fingers crossed.
i have to say, i've done times square twice for new years and it's awesome. but honestly, if there was going to be a terrorist attack this year it would be there. the last time i was there was the first time they broke 1 million people. and it's grown since. imagine the damage you could do to 1.4 million people in a five 10 block area.

Agreed. If I were the worrying type I would worry more about the less active places. It seems that all of the focus is on the big parties when damage could be done at multiple smaller locations, which seem to be unguarded.

Either way, I doubt anything is going to happen. There have been two new years parties since the original 9/11 and nothing happened at them either.
You wouldn't have to do anything particularly spectacular... you really only need to get at the radioactive material in an X ray machine and toss that in the air over Times Square to make a hundred thousand people or so very, very sick.
