I went to get my military parking decal today, and they said if I don't have insurance, they won't give me a parking decal!! I told him the law doesn't require me to have insurance to drive on public roads and he said he didn't care. Military (navy) has their own rules!? He said if I wanted to trade my bike in for a 49cc moped then I won't need insurance to park on base... :mad

Do I really need insurance? or is this guy making up his own rules?

All bases have their different rules but it is required for all military, even in states that do not have a helmet law, you wear helmet, full finger gloves, boots, pants, long sleeve shirt or jacket, MSF class, tags and mots of all INSURANCE. Not all bases require reflective vest if wearing brite color or white long sleeve shirt or jacket. Go to safty and ask for the instruction for your base. Read it and carry it with you in case PMO stops you and says you are doing something wrong.

Thanks for replying.... but the answer is not what I wanted to hear. :( I was hoping there was some way around it because my insurance company I have with my car doesn't cover motorcycle's, and if I have my car and bike on different insurance policy's the price is ridiculous.

This is not an endorsement of anything...speaking hypothetically....

but...

Do you have a car?

Can you get a replacement car sticker?

Car stickers and motorcycle stickers are the same.

just don't get caught :D

Try USAA
I had my bike and truck with them and they gave me really good rates (until I moved back to TX of course)

and dmp... that's the reason most bases will send someone out with you to watch you apply the decals these days. that, and that whole integrity thing.

I've never seen a base do that...

I'm just giving options. (shrug)

Another option is to get one month's of insurance on the bike, then cancell the policy.

Not that I've ever done this but..............................do what dmp said to do. Get some stickers for another vehicle and put them on your bike. That will solve all of your problems.

Not true, some may not enforce it, but DOD requires it. See the sticky on regulations for more guidance.

Regs state that during daylight hours, bright contrasting colors are to be worn. During hours of darkness, you must have reflective material.

I can wear my white and kawi green jacket no problem during day time. I had white reflective material sewn into the white leather, now I am legal for all times.
FWIW-approx 50% of your upper garment has to be bright, and reflective material has to be 2 1/2 inches by 12" total material on both front and back.
It will depend on your safety office as to how heavy they enforce the reg and how they inteprate it. .02

QUOTED FROM THE REG:
E3.2.7.1.5. Garment Visibility. A brightly colored outer upper garment during the day and a reflective upper garment during the night. Outer upper garment shall be clearly visible and not covered.

KEY word being AND a reflective....during the night.

Base/Post Insurance Law

All Military installations are under federal law when it comes to many things. Motorcycles is certainly one of them - one example is the Helmet Laws, even if your in a "No Helmet" state, you can bet your butt will be fried if you try rolling on post like that..

That will get a young guy/girl in more trouble than is needed. That's one reason younger or any rider for that matter has a bad taste of DOD/Base Reg's is because someone is always trying to beat the system. When they get stopped then they get pissed at the world and say that they are getting hassled!

Just do what you have to so you can avoid a pain later. It could result in having you PRIVELEDGES taken away for everything, then you are left walking!

It's not IF you get caught, it's WHEN you get caught!

When you have been put on a waiting list for four months before you can take the safety course to get stickers....................you do what you have to do.

Now we ALL know the rules. Wether we choose to follow, break, or bend them is our own decision; nobody else's.

I know that I am supposed to wear my helmet, gloves, boots, pants, long sleeve shirt and reflective vest at night. Do I? Not all the time. Can I get in trouble if I get into a wreck and I'm not wearing all of the afformentioned? Sure. Is it anyone's fault but my own? Nope.

Just my two cents.

something thing to consider: If you do wreck (on or off base) and you're not wearing your "proper PPE" (ie: reflective vest, helmet etc.) Tricare might not cover your medical bills.
and thats not a lot of fun...
