TL1000S Surging issue

Well, I finally acquired my 2000 model TL1000S. It's great only 61 miles on it, not the 90 I thought. But it has one big issue, I am trying to do the break in on it, so I have to keep the RPMs low. But the problem that I get is that if the RPMs are below 3.5k it surges horribly. It feels like the engine is cutting out actually. The thing that gets me is there is no hesitation if I am accelerating through that part of the power-band, just when I am holding it steady.

- Is this a fuel injection problem?

- Maybe bad gas(it was sitting for about 4 months with stabl)?

Help!!!!

I would start with fresh gas...no mention of a PCII, so I'm assuming you don't have one. Check the TPS on the bike and insure that's correct.

Big twins don't like those low RPM's...often you have to feather the clutch, especially down below 2k, for the slow stuff. It's alot to keep spinning at those low RPM's.

Also...check out www.tlplanet.com , alot of knowledge on the TL's over there; just be prepared to spend $$, they like to mod. :laughing

Gongrats on picking up the TLS. :D

Just to add to what B. Myers said. 3 things that help that stumble...

1. TPS calibration
2. TRE
3. Remap (Yosh Box, PCII or something else)

Yeah, get rid of that gas ASAP.

1. Ok How do I calibrate the TPS?

2. What is the TRE?

3. And yes I will get one eventually, but money is tight.

4. On my way to add some new gas to it.

www.tlplanet.com :redflip :p

TPS is the throttle positioning sensor....it makes sure everything is in "synch". YOu put the bike in dealer mode, have the idle set to 1200rpm and then make sure the bars on your tach will be in the middle and jump to the upper bar once past 1400 rpm. More details will be on the Planet..

TRE= Timing retard eliminator....makes the ECU think the bike is in top gear which will help smooth out low RPM stumbles, by eliminating the limitations in the fuel maps for the lower gears. :confused (if that makes sense) :laughing

It makes it think it's in 5th gear, actually. Im sure it's a combination of the fuel map/bad gas. Mine lurched pretty badly then I put the TRE which helped (and made it snappier), and then the PCIIIr completely smoothed the entire fuel curve.

3. You might be able to find someone close with a Yosh box. I offer mine up locally and don’t charge a thing.

PCIIIr for a TL? Only a PCII was available as far as I know.

Like stated, it needs to be remapped with a Yoshimura (YAFMS) box. This will stop the surging.

OK I have finally hit 530 miles on the TL, but the surging is still there, so but not there in 4th-6th gears only the 1st-3rd gears. I will get a TRE and see if this fixes the issue.

But onto other things, everytime i start the bike now, I get smoke comming from the exhaust. It looks blue, but with some black in it. I am worried that I am burning oil. This weekend I will pull the plugs and see if they are fouled. What would cause this? And how do i fix it.

The rings and seals may have weakened because of the amount of time that bike sat. Have you changed the oil yet? When you do, strain it and look for particles.

Welcome to the Wonderful World of TLS.
Must visit the Planet.
If they cant fixit, they will MOD it.

keep an eye on that, I had that problem with mine, if it sat for a while it would blow a lot of smoke when i started it, then after a day of very agressive riding the rings had enough.

The funny thing is I got new rings and put in TLR pistons now I dont get that surging, the bike has more power and even gets better gas mileage now:eek

Mine's an '01, and although I've heard of alot of surging problems with the 97's, both my TL and the Aprilia has a bit of surging at lower RPM's. I think it's just a characteristic of big twins to want to be running. Congrats on the purchase though, and welcome to the dark side of evil twins!!! Once you get it straightened out, there's no going back.
